About Department

The fostering creative talent for the fourth industrial revolution in the 21st century.

The educational goal in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular biology at CNU is to meet the strong demands for the research scientists and professionals in modern life sciences. The department has nine faculty members. The current enrollment for the undergraduate program is 150 students. The graduate programs consisting of MS and PhD courses currently have 40 students in MS degree program and 30 students in PhD program. For the recent 10 years, the education programs, the research activities and facilities in the department were progressed significantly. This department is one of the top educational and research institutes in life science at the Korean Peninsula.

The curriculum of the department is mainly designed to train qualified students in microbiology and various life science subjects. Especially for undergraduate students, the department offers intensive laboratory courses covering the whole range of microbiology and related fields. The main focus of the department is the fundamental researches in most of the basic disciplines of microbiology and life sciences at the biochemical, genetic, molecular and cellular level. The department also carries the applied researches cooperating with industrials and governmental agencies. Since the CNU is located in Taedok Science Town, the department has several adjunct faculty members mainly affiliated with the research institutes in this Science Town and has developed cooperative research programs with these institutes. Most of undergraduate students and every graduate student in the department are financially supported by BiO-Medi program, BK21 program and the research grants. Currently, the department is a major participant in BiO-Medi program and running BK21 program.

In general, about 90% of undergraduate students and most of graduate students have been employed right after graduation in life science related research institutes and companies. The microbial technology has been considered to be the promising industrial technology in 21st century. The departmental activities, both in teaching and research, will definitely meet the needs of the 21st century in life sciences.

Career Opportunities

Most of undergraduate students are employed after graduation or go to graduate school, and almost all of graduate students are employed in biotechnology companies or research institutes right after graduation
